Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the future of travel has been very uncertain. However, with the widespread rollout of the vaccine and the reopening of borders, it seems as though traveling is back. But if you're planning on traveling abroad, there are still many regulations in place that you must follow. Below are four tips to make your first trip abroad post COVID a little less stressful.
Complete your vaccinations before planning a trip abroad.
While it is possible to travel to some countries without being fully vaccinated, it makes the process more difficult. Many countries will require a multitude of negative COVID tests along with an approved reason for your visit to said country. Often recreational travel is not on the list of approved reasons. Additionally, traveling abroad without being fully vaccinated puts you and others at a greater risk of catching and spreading COVID-19. Traveling after being fully vaccinated makes the process a bit easier.
Research all entry and exit requirements at least a month before you leave.
Nowadays, when you book a flight abroad, the airline's website will likely inform you of COVID-related requirements for travel to that country. But more often than not, that doesn't include everything you must have in place to enter the country. Additionally, some countries have different procedures in place for entry and exit. Giving yourself adequate time to collect all necessary documentation ensures you'll have an easy transition at each border.
Keep required documents and proof of vaccination on your person at all times.
More often than not, proof of vaccination is a requirement for most activities. Having it on your person means you'll never miss out on what you want to do. While you'll likely only need required documents at border checkpoints, it is still a good idea to ensure they're always easily accessible and stored securely. Losing or misplacing required documents can result in you getting stuck in the country or incurring hefty fines to replace them.
Research methods of proof of vaccination for your trip.
Most countries have a means of proving your vaccination status digitally. And some will even issue temporary barcodes or passes for international travelers to use while abroad in said country. Having a digital copy of your vaccination status makes it a lot easier to pass COVID checkpoints and means you have one less thing to carry with you. However, it is still advisable to bring a physical copy of your vaccination status with you. Often these applications have lengthy waiting times, and if they don't come through in time for your trip, you'll still need proof of your vaccination status.
